Q Guidance/Expectations for this First Draft: • Following in Anne Lamott's advice in "Shitty First Drafts," this is the "up" draft--where you try to say what you have to say more effectively than you might have been able to in your previous draft. Accordingly, this draft should reflect thorough and thoughtful rethinking. The primary expectation (one of the requirements for credit) is that this First Draft reflect further thinking than the Zero Draft you wrote and resembles a more proper, well-formed draft. • Unlike your zero draft, this draft should be formatted in paragraph form, in MLA style (Links to an external site.). • Your ideas will likely change shape as you move from this to the subsequent drafts, but this draft should reflect your best efforts to address The Text and the Self: The Personal/Academic Essay Assignment. • It is likely still too early to write a conclusion--you'll figure that out once you've spent more time (re)writing through revision. • Don't worry! Your essay will still change and evolve after this draft--this does NOT need to be final-draft quality--now is the time to focus on the global stuff--on the inclusion and strength of the ideas, the detail, the analysis, not on the grammar, wording, or spelling.
